I was raised in a loving Lutheran home with 4 of us brothers. My mom led patient billing services for a hospital and was an accomplished pianist, filling our home with music. My dad was a Lutheran elementary school principal and as part of his call was to be the church organist and choir director, so I grew up playing in that school and church and was always around music. I met my wife Lisa at Viterbo College (in choir, of course) which was connected to the motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. It was there that I experienced the joyous life of devout Catholics, which was far from the “evils” that I previously understood from my narrow-minded religious school upbringing. In 1989, I was confirmed in the Catholic faith and we were married at the Cathedral of LaCrosse and then moved to Michigan. Lisa pursued her master's degree in vocal performance while I started my 30-year career of teaching music for the Chelsea School District, a profession in a school system that I cherished very much. We returned to St. Mary Church once our two children began CCD instruction.
I’ve been Director of Music Ministry here at St. Mary for 1 year and recently taken on the role of Director of Liturgy. I always say that the Holy Spirit worked me through a very interesting path from volunteering to work in the kitchen for Vacation Bible School, which led to leading VBS music and now to my current positions on staff. I love our church and have always found that the St. Mary parish is a dynamic community, filled with amazing, giving people.
