In 1997, The Franciscan Project, Inc., a non-profit, tax-exempt organization was co-founded in Detroit by two Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement, Sr. Patricia Mary Hackett, SA and Sr. Ann Francis Mahany, SA. The Project was initiated to be a peaceful Gospel PRESENCE in a neighborhood. A family literacy program, children's organic garden and adult computer literacy program were developed in partnership with foundations, organizations and the volunteer support of Ford Motor Company.
In the spirit of the St. Francis of Assisi, solidarity with the poor, care for the earth and the promotion of environmentally safe practices are constituent dimensions of the ministry.
Following their relocation to Chelsea, Michigan in 2008, the Sisters initiated the Martha/Mary Contemplative Outreach Ministry for Women. They offer contemplative evenings, a reflection group, hermitage days, spiritual direction/companionship and workshops on spirituality.
